Pissed
A short split-screen film set in a bar on a crowded Friday night, following two guys through an evening of misunderstandings, fights, beer and toilets, as they both compete for the affections of the cutest girl in the room. But this is a world where karma exists and balance will inevitably be restored... Pissed was an offhand idea we threw together quickly to enter into Tropfest and was written specifically to appeal to the tastes of that festival. While we didn't get into Tropfest, the film has gone on to have quite a long life online. |

The Shoot We shot the film at the Brunswick Green, a local bar whose decor is a production designer's dream come true. However, the owner got cold feet the night before the shoot and told us we couldn't use film lights or have alcohol on set (booze in a bar? what a crazy idea...). So we shot the film using household lamps, and luckily managed to source non-alcoholic beer from the local Muslim community. The film's events were carefully choreographed to a count track played over the stereo, to ensure the timing worked, and we shot with a Merlin steadicam junior to give a flowing feel to the handheld camera. Editing This was my first go at playing around with split-screen and it was quite a learning experience. The main thing I realized is that when watching a split-screen the viewer instinctively thinks of them as occurring at the same time. So even though we quite clearly showed the time split right at the start, with the shot of the clock showing two different times, people still struggled with the concept that the two screens were offset chronologically. Pissed has done quite well online, screening as part of the Portable Film Festival and other digital media outlets, as well on the giant public screen at Federation Square in Melbourne. It was also added to Vimeo's Split-Screen Channel.
