Amanda Palmer - In My Mind
"We made, I think, a pretty fucking amazing video for only having two hours and no plan." - Amanda Palmer This music video came about due to a lucky conjunction of circumstance and location. Accompanying the lovely and talented Kim Boekbinder, I had joined the Amanda Palmer Goes Down Under tour in Newcastle. The venue there was a magnificent old hotel, the top four floors of which had been disused for years. Crumbling into beautiful decay, the space was room after room full of dust and pigeons, with a faded ballroom as the centerpiece, full of mirrors and soft light. Amanda and I had a quick explore before the show started, marveling over what a stunning location it would be for something… You can read the full story of what happened next in a joint post written by Amanda and myself for her blog: bit.ly/em8HV8 |

Being a spur of the moment opportunity, this video was shot in about two hours with no crew. It was just the two of us working out a plan as we went along, in what Amanda describes as a 'ninja video shoot'. While not ideal shooting conditions, in this case I think the improvised 'seize the moment' approach actually resonates well with what the song is about and was certainly a lot of fun.
This shoot also highlights what I love about using digital SLRs, being able to have a full camera kit in my carry on luggage on the off chance I'd need it, meant I was ready to shoot within 10 minutes of getting the call to arms. |
